Avengers Assemble opens tonight in the UK, with the new Honda NSX front and centre…

Honda NSX Spider
From the big screens of the world today comes news of the biggest defection in the world of fast cars since Ayrton Senna ditched his McLaren for a Williams. Here's Tony Stark in a... Honda. Yeah, Iron Man, who single-handedly made the Audi R8 the supercar of choice for 10-year olds has switched... to the new NSX.

Acura - posh Hondas in the USA - are saying only that Stark's car is a one-off prototype created for the new documentary about the playboy industrialist's life Avengers Assemble. But it sure does look like a new NSX, only with the roof missing. Stark, known for his passionate commitment to alternative power sources, is said to have be unimpressed with the rate of development of Audi's e-tron project.

"If I can build an Arc Reactor in a cave in Afghanistan with only rudimentary tools and my own genius, what's taking those suckers in Inglostadt so long?" said the chairman of Stark Industries.

Top Gear can exclusively confirm the NSX does not feature Arc Reactor power, but instead has a series of electric motors to compliment and boost the output of a high-revving, mid-mounted V6 engine. Two smaller motors in the front wheels make the car effectively four wheel drive (like the R8), but are designed to perform independently creating the same torque-vectoring characteristics as the best front drive cars and McLaren's MP4-12C (via brake application) and a small selection of all-wheel drive cars (with traditional and e-diffs).
Read about the new Honda NSX here

There's another electric engine squeezed in with the engine and transmission that operates more like a conventional hybrid. And the NSX is light, although it is not thought Stark Industries has shared the nickel-single crystal titanium alloy used in the Iron Man suit.

"As a extremely high-net worth customer - and we mean extremely - we cannot comment on Mr Stark's choice of cars," said an Audi spokesperson "But as a connoisseur of fine automobiles he'll still have his R8s tucked up in his garage" (Audi did actually say this to us).

The Avengers documentary also provides evidence that Stark's defection from Audi has caught the attention of Nick Fury, Director of the S.H.I.E.L.D operation. Fury has allocated a specially modified Acura MDX to all his agents, although it is believed he was unable to persuade Captain America to abandon his custom Harley-Davidson.

"We do have a supply deal with S.H.I.E.L.D," confirmed an Acura spokesman. "All its agents, including Mr Stark, now drive our cars. Well, I say all. We're struggling with the Hulk. Sometimes all he needs is a Jazz, other days...." (Acura didn't actually say this to us. Although we wish they did).

Honda Rolls Out ‘Green Dealer’ Program for US Stores, Encourages Energy Conservation

Honda Odyssey
American Honda Motor Co. revealed this week the establishment of what it has titled a “green dealer” program for its independently-owned Honda and Acura dealers in the U.S.
The program offers three achievement levels: Silver, Gold and Platinum.
And the  “Honda Environmental Leadership Award and Acura Environmental Leadership Award will be given to dealers who quantifiably reduce their environmental impact, beginning with a minimum 10 percent reduction in total energy use at their dealerships,” officials explained.
Highlighting the different levels, Silver-level dealers must achieve a 10 percent reduction in total energy use, develop a water use reduction plan and implement a comprehensive recycling program.
And the  top-level Platinum award is reserved for dealers whose facilities earn LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, officials explained.
That said, 10 dealers have already received the award, 18 more have applied to be in the program and more than 200 dealers have independently developed initiatives to reduce their environmental impact.
Commenting on the program Steven Center, vice president of the American Honda Environmental Business Development Office, noted, “We’ve designed this program around what we feel are both challenging but achievable targets that are within the reach of most of our 1,300 U.S. Honda and Acura dealers. Now our goal is to engage as many of them as possible in our program, and together achieve the broadest possible benefit for our environment.”
Giving some background on the program, Honda introduced the voluntary program to its dealers at national sales meetings held last fall, “generating interest among hundreds of Honda and Acura dealers,” the OEM noted.
The company uses a third party evaluator to conduct environmental audits of participating dealers and recommend strategies for reducing their energy use.
The OEM also provided a list of dealers who have already earned the Honda or Acura Environmental Leadership Award.

2012 Honda Civic Hybrid: Hammer It, How High Is Gas Mileage?

2012 Honda Civic Hybrid: Hammer It, How High Is Gas Mileage?

2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, road test, Spring 2011
Honda has managed to raise the gas mileage ratings on all of its new 2012 Civic models, including the 2012 Civic Hybrid, which is rated at a combined 44 mpg.
In a road test over several days last May, we managed to get a real-world 45.3 mpg over a route that was about two-thirds highway, one-thirds local.
But, we wondered how the Honda Civic Hybrid would fare if we hammered it in aggressive real-world usage.
This past weekend, we tested the new hybrid Civic by running it up and down the hills of San Francisco.
Then we hit the the local freeways at speeds that reflected not the speed limits but the pace of prevailing traffic (and perhaps a bit more), and drove it at the height of the Bay Area's grim, aggressive, stop-and-go rush-hour traffic.
The result? While the average mileage varied quite a lot over the course of our 148-mile trip, we ended up at 37.3 mpg.
Mileage in pure city use ranged from 28 to 32 mpg, while a lengthy stint of highway mileage took us up to 40 mpg.

With a few hundred more miles of that, we suspect we'd have gotten closer to our 45-mpg result from last spring.
That's pretty good for any compact sedan in mixed use, and with slightly gentler driving, we're confident the Civic Hybrid would deliver more than 40 mpg across a variety of duty cycles and average speeds.
Beyond gas mileage, we had the same reactions to the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid that we did in May.
It's an awkward car to drive smoothly, especially in stop-and-go traffic when the engine may switch off just as you want to move forward. That applied especially to the four-way stops at every intersection in San Francisco neighborhoods.
The Civic Hybrid is relatively comfortable, fairly well equipped, and otherwise utterly anonymous as only a Civic can be.
So, while we didn't change our views of the car, we did confirm that even in aggressive use, you'll still get better gas mileage than a non-hybrid Civic model under the same circumstances.
