Honda Provides First 2013 Fit EV to City of Torrance, California

Honda Provides First 2013 Fit EV to City of Torrance, California

2013 Honda Fit EV in Torrance 1
Honda today handed over the keys to its all-electric hatchback, the 2013 Fit EV, to the mayor of Torrance, California. The city will use the Fit EV as part of the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program, which also will see Google and Stanford University testing the electric car.
The Fit EV uses a 20-kWh lithium-ion battery and 92-kW electric motor, with total driving range pegged at about 76 miles per charge. The Honda hatchback retains the fun, nimble handling traits of its gasoline-powered forbear, although the “magic” folding rear seat mechanism has been nixed to make room for the battery pack. Honda says the car can be recharged in as little as three hours with a 240-volt charger.
The Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program is designed to improve consumer awareness of electric cars, and to help Honda get real-world information about electric and hybrid car performance. Later this year, Honda will also provide the city of Torrance with a plug-in hybrid for early testing.
Google, Stanford, and Torrance are all supposed to use their Fit EVs for car-sharing, fleet purposes, and other driving scenarios. After the trial period is over, Honda will slowly roll out the electric car to the general public. Customers in certain parts of California and Oregon will be able to purchase the Fit EV starting in early 2013. The car is expected to cost $37,395 (including destination) or lease for about $399 per month.

Honda Ships First 2013 Fit EV to California Couple

2013 Honda Fit EV with first customer 2
Two long-time Honda owners in California are getting a special present for Christmas in July: a brand new 2013 Honda Fit EV in their driveway.
It’s been a little while since we first drove the Fit EV and proclaimed it to be both “commendable” and “rambunctious,” and this week marks the first delivery of the car to a customer. Currently Fit EVs are lease-only vehicles, available through three-year programs at $389/month, and only available in five select markets within California and Oregon. Availability will expand to certain East Coast markets next year, and Honda hopes to lease 1100 Fit EVs over the next three years. It now has 1099 to go.
The first Fit EV went to Matt and Becky Walton, who picked their Fit EV up at Woodland Hills Honda just north of Los Angeles. They promise to use the Fit EV as a commuter car, reserving their Odyssey minivan as their backup vehicle.
Here’s where things get interesting: the Waltons have been longtime Honda owners, stretching all the way back to the N600 and Z600 subcompacts back in the 1970s. The N600 and Z600 were considered to be the predecessors to the iconic Civic, and both were powered by 600-cc (0.6-liter) engines that put out 45 and 36 horsepower, respectively. The Waltons will be happy to know that the Fit EV makes 123 horsepower in sport mode, more than their old N and Z cars combined. The Fit EV is also rated at the equivalent of 118 mpg, which tops even the tiny-engined classic Hondas.
Provided you live in California or Oregon, the Fit EV is available–in any color, so long as it’s blue — right now.

2013 Honda Civic Hybrid Will Be Made In U.S., Not Japan

2013 Honda Civic Hybrid Will Be Made In U.S., Not Japan

2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, road test, Spring 2011
Thanks to the spiraling costs associated with building cars in Japan and shipping them to the U.S., Honda has announced that the 2013 Civic Hybrid will be made in the U.S.
Currently made in Japan and shipped to customers in North America, the U.S. version of the four-door compact hybrid sedan will commence at Honda’s Indiana manufacturing facility early next year.
Identical to the current Civic Hybrid -- which underwent a total redesign for 2012 -- the 2013 Civic Hybrid should match the 2012 Civic Hybrid’s 44 mpg EPA rating for both city and highway driving.
Honda says it has invested $40 million in its Indiana production facilities to increase its annual production to 250,000 cars per year.
It also plans to hire 300 new production staff later this year in preparation for the increased production.

The facility, which already produces the 2012 Civic Sedan and 2012 Civic Natural Gas, already has experience with hybrid production.
Since April this year, the facility has been making U.S.-market 2012 Acura ILX Hybrids
Despite outwards appearances, the two cars share a common platform, engine and mild-hybrid drivetrain.
The move will mark the first time the Civic Hybrid sedan has been made outside of Japan since it launched in 2001.
Production of its European sibling, the 2013 Honda Civic Hybrid hatchback, is being moved to Swindon, England.
There’s no details yet on how the change of production facility will affect the 2013 Civic Hybrid’s price, although from past experience domestically-produced cars tend to be cheaper than ones manufactured overseas.
