A new poll shows young drivers are more likely to use cell phones while driving, and that 30 percent of them have recently texted from behind the wheel, US Transportation officials said.

Among the findings are that 63 percent of respondents under 30-years-old reported using a handheld phone while driving in the past 30 days, the Department of Transportation said.

And 30 percent of the drivers texted from behind the wheel in the same time period according to the survey conducted by magazine Consumer Reports.

The release of the poll came as Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called distracted driving "a deadly epidemic."

Driving distracted, whether using a cell phone, driving under the influence or driving recklessly, is dangerous and potentially deadly. And distracted driving habits? prevalence amongst our young novice drivers is cause for alarm. That?s why DCH Auto Group dealerships have made teen safe driving a priority. Through education, action and advocacy DCH?s Teen Safe Driving Program educates teens to make smart decisions when they get behind the wheel.

Recently, DCH has joined The National Safety Council (NSC) and The Allstate Foundation (TAF) to form a coalition of likeminded organizations in New Jersey, New York and California to further the message of teen safe driving.

This coalition knows that with parental involvement, education and support for stronger teen driving systems, teen driving deaths can be significantly reduced. This cannot happen without support from New Jersey, New York and California residents.

The coalition?s goal is to improve the culture of teen safe driving by reducing the number of teens killed and injured in crashes in New Jersey, New York and California while instilling a lifetime of safe driving attitudes and behaviors among young drivers.

Through community involvement and the national support of NSC and TAF, DCH Auto Group dealerships know that we can make a difference in teenagers? lives.
